High Fructose Corn Syrup contains mercury

A new study shows half the samples tested contained mercury. This includes 1/3 of 55 popular name brands where HFCS is the first or second ingredient.

Mercury contamination is very harmful and toxic in all forms. It should be avoided. Pregnant women are advised to avoid certain fish because of high levels of mercury.

High fructose corn syrup is a synthetic sweetner that has replaced sugar in many items. It’s much cheaper than sugar, so is used by many companies in all types of foods and all kinds of brands.

“Mercury is toxic in all its forms. Given how much high-fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered. We are calling for immediate changes by industry and the [U.S. Food and Drug Administration] to help stop this avoidable mercury contamination of the food supply,” said the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy’s Dr. David Wallinga, a co-author of both studies.

The use of mercury-contaminated caustic soda in the production of HFCS is common. The contamination occurs when mercury cells are used to produce caustic soda. So the good news is HFCS can be produced without caustic soda, the bad news is us consumers do not know if the HFCS containing products we are consuming are produced using caustic soda or not.

What can you do? Avoid HFCS. Read the labels, if it contains HFCS, put it back on the shelf. This is what I have done, even before knowing about the mercury contaimination.

We try to avoid sythetically produced ingredients in our house, opting for the safe and natural stuff. HFCS has also been linked to behavioral problems, but not sure anything has been proven there. Though I know several kids who were taken off HFCS and their behavior improved drastically with this change alone. Proof enough for me.

CFL Lightbulbs Contain Mercury

Parents need to exercise caution when using the energy saving CFL lightbulbs. They contain mercury, which produces the light, but in an amount that can be harmful to children and even a fetus. Exposure to mercury can harm the nervous system. In this Maine study, even after the mercury from these broken bulbs was cleaned up, high levels of mercury were still present. Here is an excerpt from the article.

“The study recommended that if a compact fluorescent breaks, get children and pets out of the room. Ventilate the room. Never use a vacuum, even on a rug, to clean up a broken compact fluorescent lamps. Instead, use stiff paper such as index cards and tape to pick up pieces, and then wipe the area with a wet wipe or damp paper towel. If there are young children or pregnant woman in the house, consider cutting out the piece of carpet where the lamp broke as a precaution. Place the shards and cleanup debris in a glass jar with a screw top and remove the jar from the house.”

“According to the US Department of Energy, if every household replaced just one light bulb with a compact fluorescent, the United States would save more than $600 million each year in energy costs and prevent greenhouse gas emissions equal to 800,000 cars.

But compact fluorescents can contain from 1 to 30 milligrams of mercury, according to the Mercury Policy Project. The nonprofit cited a New Jersey study that estimated that about 2 to 4 tons of the element are released into the environment in the United States each year from compact fluorescents. That number is expected to grow as sales do. In comparison, about 48 tons of mercury is released into the environment by power plants each year, according to federal statistics.”

My comments: I am torn because I do care about the environment, but mercury is not safe. I have an active 23 month old and a lot of lamps. Plus, plants who manufacture CFLs put a lot of mercury vapors into the air and I do not want to support that. Additionally, disposing of these can be tricky. Many states are making it illegal to dispose of in the regular trash and are setting up recyling locations for CFL bulbs.

What to do? If you use or plan to use CFL light bulbs, do not use them in lamps where there is potential for the lamp to get knocked over, breaking the bulb. Be sure to handle the bulb with care and screw it in by the base and not the bulb itself (screwing by the bulb could cause it to break — good to know). And be sure to properly dispose of the used or broken bulb — find a location where you can recycle it, do not toss it in the regular trash where it will end up in a landfill, break and send harmful mercury into the local water.

Hey manufacturers, make one that is actually safe for humans and the environment, and as effective and I will gladly change every lightbulb in my house — not just 1. For now, I will use the regular bulbs and turn off lights when not in use.

Vaccines: What are we putting in our children?

To vaccinate or not is a hotly contested debate today. Parents have good reasons on both sides of the fence. Me? I am currently on the fence, but the more I learn, the more I am convinced that at minimum, we are over-vaxing our children.

Many vaccines contain an alarming amount of additives as well as animal and even HUMAN by-products. Nearly all vaccines contain at least 1 animal by-product, heavy chemicals, and most contain antibiotics. The MMR, as well as several others, contain cells from aborted HUMAN fetuses. This is shocking an unacceptable in my opinion. And I highly doubt the general public is aware of this. Other harmful ingredients are thimerosal (mercury based preservative), aluminum (liked to Alzheimer’s disease) and formaldehyde. Mercury is highly toxic and when combined with aluminum and formaldehyde, the synergistic effects increase 10,000-fold. Scary stuff.

The growing number of children diagnosed with Autism is alarming. Many parents say their children exhibited early signs after receiving the MMR vaccine. The preservative thimerosal (mercury) is believed to be a cause. Before the MMR vaccine, Autism cases were 1 in 10,000, today 1 in 150 children are diagnosed with Autism. Some studies show a link between the hepatitis B vaccine and diabetes, the DTaP and SIDS, and the Rotovirus vaccine and intestinal problems. Some believe the shaken baby syndrome is sometimes misdiagnosed and is really a reaction to vaccinations.

By vaxing too early in life, you interfere with the body’s own God-given, natural immune system. Doctors will tell you they “do not know” when your immune system is fully mature. I think this is because we always encounter new diseases/germs and the immune system is hard at work until the day we die. I have read that the most critical time for immune system development is the first 2 years of life, a very good reason to continue breastfeeding for 2 years as is suggested by UNICEF and the WHO. The AAP encourages nursing beyond 1 year as well.

In fact, when Japan increased the vaccination age from 2 months to 2 years, their infant mortality rate dropped drastically and they went from being ranked 17th in the world to #1. Meaning, Japan had the greatest infant survival rate in the world and these were non-vaccinated children!!

I recently picked up “The Vaccine Book” by Dr. Sears. I am still reading the book, but it is really great so far. It goes through each vaccine and he lists the pros and cons. He gives his take on where the pros outweigh the cons and gives a suggested minimum vaccination schedule for those parents who do what to vaccinate, but not fully.

Certainly this is every parent’s decision, and a very difficult one at that. Many parents vaccinate against diseases because a family member may have had the measles or mumps. Very valid reason. Other’s have researched and learned of the dangers and risks associated with vaccinations and opt not to vaccinate their child – also very valid reason.  Both groups are responsible parents and their decisions should be respected.

I found this handout on recognizing signs of reactions to a vaccination. It also includes some staggering statics of childhood diseases such as the number of children diagnosed with diabetes, asthma, autism, ADHD and developmental delays have more than tripled in the last 25 years. The number of vaccines recommended for children under 6 by the AAP has more than doubled in those 25 years.

There are exceptions you can get since most daycares and public schools require all enrolled children be current on the AAP recommended vaccination schedule. These exemptions can be medical, religious or philisophical.
